In their first home game of the 2012 boys varsity soccer season, the Garden City Trojans played host to the Wantagh Warriors on Wednesday afternoon, September 12th. The Trojans, under first year head coach Paul Cutter and assistant Tom Skrivanek, opened the season with a 1-1 tie against Island Trees on September 8th. The Warriors, coached by Tom Liguori, with assistants John Cuiffo, Craig Klasson and Franco Zigari came into the game with a 2-0 record after defeating Calhoun 1-0 on Sept 10th and East Syracuse-Minoa 1-0 on Sept. 8th.
With the tough, physical play by both teams, the game had all of the qualities of a playoff match. Garden City got on the board first with a goal by junior Jack Gillan, off an assist from Alex Franco at 14:59 in the first half. The Trojans only held the lead for five minutes before Wantagh evened it up when sophomore Chris Taibi scored for the Warriors.
The first half ended in the 1-1 tie but the Warriors took a 2-1 lead off a Chris Berry goal at 30:46 in the second half. Similar to the first half, that lead only lasted about five minutes as GC's Patrick Keogh found the back of the net to make it 2-2.
Coach Cutter split the goal keeping duties for the Trojans between Tyler Biscone, who made four first half saves, and Ray Leto, who made nine saves in a very busy second half. Wantagh goalie Kevin Laibach made four saves in the game. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Trojans will travel to Jericho to take on the Jayhawks on Friday afternoon September 14th. The Warriors also have a game on Friday as the team will travel to Westbury.
